The China-Iran relationship is rooted in limited pragmatic cooperation but has evolved in recent years into a partnership more pointedly opposed to the U.S.-led international order. Beijing views Tehran’s opposition to the United States as augmenting China’s increasing global influence, evidenced in part by Iran’s proliferation of Chinese anti-U.S. disinformation during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The Iranian regime’s destabilizing actions in the Middle East also complicate the United States’ efforts to shift its focus to the Indo-Pacific.
